Every Timepieces in Christopher Nolan Films

Updated: Jun 1, 2023

Nolan has made some of his most influential and popular films. According to The Wall Street Journal, Christopher Nolan has been able to combine box-office success with artistic ambition. Critics have often named Nolan's movies among the best of their respective decades, earning him a reputation as one of the greatest directors in cinematic history.

In 2017, 3 of Christopher Nolan's films (The dark knight, Inception, and Interstellar) were included in Empire magazine's "The 100 Greatest Movies" poll. It doesn't just stop there; The Hollywood Reporter listed him amongst the 100 most influential people in the entertainment industry. The Parade magazine ranked Nolan in the 8th position amongst 75 Best Movie Directors of All Time.

"When you first look at [Nolan’s films] … there’s a sort of temptation to view it as a mostly technical matter and to see him as this kind of grand watchmaker of cinema."
-Tom Shone, film critic and author of “The Nolan Variations”-

I second Tom Shone's statement, which is the reason for this article. The temptation to list all the timepieces spotted in Christopher Nolan's movies. Without further ado, here is the list of movies and timepieces in Christopher Nolan's movies.

Insomnia (2002): TAG Heuer Link

In his first film since 2001's hit "Memento," director Christopher Nolan remakes the Norwegian movie "Insomnia," directed by Erik Skjoldbjaerg in the1997. Different from many remake films, the Nolan version is not a pale retread. Nolan has taken an old classic, delivering an intense burn, emotional and intense experience that gets you hooked until the movie's end.

In 2002's Insomnia, Al Pacino plays a veteran police detective who has lost all hope. He was spotted wearing the Tag Heuer Link in the movie.

In 2002's Insomnia, Al Pacino plays a veteran police detective who has lost all hope. He was spotted wearing the Tag Heuer Link in the movie. The first generation Tag Heuer Link came around in 1999 and was made in 2004. According to Fratello watches, the Link was inspired by the S/El (Sports Elegance) line that debuted in 1987. The Link took the S/EL's trademark "double S" links and made them a little fewer '80s. The Link line had automatic, quartz, and chronograph versions designed for both men and women.

Batman Begins (2005): Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Grand Taille

Batman Begins (2005) is a superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan and is based on the DC Comics character of the same name. Starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne / Batman, with Liam Neeson, Michael Caine, Katie Holmes, and Cillian Murphy in supporting roles. This movie version penetrates the Batman legend's dark, conflicted, and challenging depths, creating a superhero who is at least persuasive as a man driven to become a vigilante behind the bat suit. In the movie, Bruce Wayne was spotted wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grand Taille Watch in 2 scenes; When Bruce was in his backroom when Rachel visits and the iconic restaurant scene where Bruce purchased the whole hotel.

The Dark Knight Rises (2008): Jaeger LeCoulture Reverso Grand Taille

It doesn't just stop there. 3 years after the release of Christopher Nolan's Batman, the second franchise of Batman: The Dark Knight (2008) was released. The film tells about the condition of Gotham City when various terrors attacked it. Batman (Christian Bale), assisted by Lieutenant Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) and District Attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), tries to quell the rampant crime on its streets.

The Joker (played by Heath Ledger), a psychotic villain with clown make up, is terrorizing Gotham City. The mafia boss Marconi is in prison, so no leader can stop him. The Joker doesn't hesitate to take lives. He kills many people, including his henchmen, to prove that he's serious about his evil role in Gotham City.

And again, in the movie, Bruce Wayne was spotted wearing Jaeger-LeCoulture Reverso Watch when he was driving a Lamborghini car, trying to save his employee who nearly turned a traitor to reveal Batman's true identity.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012): Jaeger LeCoulture Reverso Grande Date & Traser H3 Blackstorm Pro

The Dark Knight Rises (2012) is the third and final instalment of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. The movie earned more money than its predecessor but underperformed compared to that film--which remains the highest-grossing movie centred around Batman. In The Dark Knight Rises, 8 years after the Joker's reign of chaos ended, Batman (Christian Bale) is coerced out of exile with the assistance of Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) to defend Gotham City from Bane.

Bruce Wayne is spotted wearing Jaeger-LeCoulture Reverso Grand Date Watch in the scene where Bruce is planning his next move to find Bane, but then Alfred interrupts Bruce and expresses his worries and starts his "when is this going to end" conversation.

On the other hand, when Michael Caine played Alfred in The Dark Knight trilogy, he started to regularly wear an H3 Black Storm Pro tool watch made by the Swiss brand Traser.

According to several sources and many blogs, in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008), Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne wears a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Grand Taille. The Art Deco design with two sides perfectly reflects both sides of his life: day and night. In The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Bale switches to a JLC Reverso Grande Date, which features a large dual date aperture.

JLC created a limited-edition Reverso Tribute with a bespoke engraved bat image on the case back. It was a nod to the original Batman Reverso from Batman Forever. Only 10 pieces were made and presented to Warner Bros executives. Unfortunately, it is not available to the public. Many believed the JLC Reverso Christopher Nolan wore when he received the best director and best picture award at the 2015 Empire Awards, was the Batman Reverso.

Inception (2010): Tag Heuer Carrera Automatic WV211B.BA0787, IWC Mark XVI, Cartier Tank, Rolex Submariner, and a Random Gold Dress Watch

Inception is a movie about a thief, Dom Cobb, played by actor Leonardo Dicaprio, who can enter people's subconscious dreams and steal their secrets. His unique skill has made him a popular demand in the so-called "corporate espionage" world. Despite his popularity, it has also cost him everything he loves. When Cobb gets a chance at redemption, it will be the perfect crime if he can plant an "idea" in someone's mind. However, an enemy anticipates Cobb's every move. According to Roger Ebert, Christopher Nolan spent 10 years writing his screenplay for "Inception." The film's leading man challenges a young architect by asking her to create a maze, and Nolan challenges us with his dazzling maze.

Dom Cobb (Leonardo Dicaprio), was spotted multiple times with a Tag Heuer Carrera Automatic WV211B.BA0787

Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a secondary character and Don Cobb's most trusted partner. He wears an IWC Mark XVI during the movie, which is no longer in production. The watch has a silver jubilee band and a black dial.

Ariadne (Ellen Page), who is part of Cobb's team and a newcomer to the dreaming world, wears a Cartier Tank watch with a brown leather strap.

Saito (Ken Watanabe), another Cobb's team member and a successful Japanese businessman, was caught wearing a Rolex Submariner during the movie.

Eames (Tom Hardy) is a vital part of the secrecy within the dream world. He can project the image of anyone by forging an identity as a literal physical manifestation. With his ability to mirror other people's manners and behaviour, no one would ever know he was not who he seemed to be.

Unfortunately, after several research and posts in forums, Eames's watch identity remains a mystery. Tom Hardy wore a Tank-style gold dress watch during the filming of Inception, but it is unclear what brand or type it was. The dial was as wide as the metal bracelet, and it was all gold with a black dial.

Interstellar (2014): Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date & Hamilton Custom “Murph” Watch

Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway. The plot of the 2014 film Interstellar centres around a group of astronauts who travel through hyperspace to find and save humanity before Earth becomes uninhabitable. The film was based on the work of theoretical physicist Dr Kip Thorne, who co-wrote the screenplay with director Christopher Nolan.

After saying goodbye to his family, Cooper leaves on a mission through space. He gives one of his two watches to his daughter, Murph, and takes the other. We see Cooper become responsible for saving people in space and how Murph grows up to be a scientist who helps save Earth.

This is one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. Before Cooper explains to Murph just how long he'll be gone, he removes his watch and pulls another out of the pocket of his Carhartt jacket (the Murph watch).

The Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date watch has a 42mm wide steel case and features a Swiss ETA 2834-2 automatic movement that includes both a day and date complication.

As for the Hamilton Murph watch, Hamilton produced about 10 pieces for the production. After filming was over, all but one of those pieces were returned to Hamilton. A few months ago, Hamilton held a giveaway for one lucky winner to receive one of these Hamilton Khaki Interstellar watches. Although the Hamilton Murph watch will never be produced commercially, it remains an important part of the Interstellar movie.

Dunkirk (2017): Omega "RAF" 1940 Ref CK2129 and Omega CK2444

Dunkirk (2017), a historical war film written and directed by Christopher Nolan, tells the story of the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation from three perspectives. The true story takes place in May and June 1940, when Nazi German forces in northern France surrounded a group of Allied soldiers after a surprise attack. They were forced to retreat to the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk and cut off from the rest of their army.

The film Dunkirk tells its story in a non-linear fashion. It does not follow the events chronologically but instead jumps back and forth between 3 different periods and groups of characters during the battle and rescue. Although the movie is about war, it doesn't focus on the bloody aspects of the battle.

In the movie, Farrier, Tom Hardy's RAF pilot character, was spotted to be wearing the Omega "RAF" 1940 Ref CK2129. This scene was before the spitfire battle when Ferrier’s aeroplane’s gas tank indicator was not working. So through the radio, Farrier had to ask Fortis, his fellow aircraft (another plane) ally, how many gallons of gas was in his indicator. With chalk, Farrier wrote the gas indicator while calculating with his CK2129 watch how much time he had before he ran out of gas.

The CK2129 was a popular choice of watch for RAF pilots and navigators in the early days of the Second World War. Its unique rotating bezel enabled the timing of intervals during flights, which was crucial for navigation purposes.

Later towards the end of World War II, as warfare moved toward the Pacific Ocean, another OMEGA watch resurfaced. It was the Omega CK2444. One of its notable features was its superb water resistance, which led to it being given an "W.W.W." (Waterproof Wrist Watch) engraving on the caseback. The British Ministry of Defense (MoD) gave it this nickname because they used it to test how well watches stood up against pressure in deep water. There were two Broad Arrow markings on the dial and caseback that were typical of British military watches in those days.

Tenet (2020): Hamilton Jazzmaster and Hamilton Khaki

Christopher Nolan's movie Tenet (2020) is a mind-bending sci-fi thriller about a secret agent trying to prevent the world's end. John David Washington, known only as the "Protagonist,"  faces unfathomable challenges. Stars as one of two allies on this mission with his counterpart, Neil (Robert Pattinson). The film Tenet takes risks by pushing boundaries and allowing us to escape from reality during a time when fiction seems more implausible than fact.

In Christopher Nolan's 2020 time-bending movie Tenet, 2 wristwatches are prominently featured in the film:

  • Hamilton Jazzmaster Seaview Chrono Quartz

  • Hamilton Khaki Navy BeLOWZERO (specially made for the movie version)

Final Thoughts

There you go, the list of watches that are in Christopher Nolan's movies. Unfortunately, I can't find any timepieces in 3 of Nolan's movies;

  • Following (1998)

  • Memento (2000)

  • The Prestige (2006)

So what do you guys think? Are there any watches that you have found that I have not listed in this article? Let me know in the comment section below, or write your thoughts on our social media.
